Sydney brewery Redoak has emerged from the European Beer Star 2013 with two new pieces of bling for the trophy shelf, snagging gold medals for its Redoak Schwarzbier in the Schwarzbier category and Redoak Winter in the Rye, a Rye Bock, in the Bier with alternate cereals category.
“This prize is particularly special for us,” said brewer David Hollyoak. “To win Gold for our Schwarzbier and Winter in the Rye, two traditional German beer styles, in Munich Germany is one of my proudest brewing moments. To achieve this up against some of the finest brewers and beers in the world and to win in their country of origin is very humbling.”
Competition organisers said “This year’s competition was as tough as it has ever been – a total of 1,512 beers from 40 countries participated in the 2013 competition, an increase of 11% over the previous year.
The judging committee consisted of 102 people evaluating the beers during an all-day blind taste test held in the Doemens Brewing Academy in Gräfelfing. The prizes were awarded on 18 September during a ceremony held at the Drinktec in Munich.
It’s an amazing achievement, and one that comes hot on the heels of Redoak’s recent success in the UK this month where they won ‘Supreme Champion’ in the International Beer Challenge in London. For more information, head to www.redoak.com.au.
