Botany View Hotel (BVH) and Young Henrys are partnering on a new initiative, Newtown Sound, a 10-week event series which will showcase some of Sydney’s up-and-coming live music acts every week, starting Friday, 31 January.
Founder of Newtown Sound and entertainment company Damn Entertainment, Darren Aboud, told Beer & Brewer on behalf of BVH how excited the team is to host the event. With live music at the core of the venue’s identity, BVH continues to support Sydney’s music scene and champion emerging artists.
“We want to foster meaningful connections between artists and audiences, showcase exceptional local talent, and witness artists grow and refine their craft. Every event we host strengthens our commitment to live music and adds another layer to our legacy,” Aboud said.
“We aim to make every night resonate with the sounds of local talent. Whether it’s a band taking their first steps on our stage or a community member walking in to play a tune on our piano, music flows through the veins of this pub.”
BVH has been a launchpad for some of Australia’s greatest local musical talents in previous years including Amyl and the Sniffers, DMA’s and Mac The Knife.
“Our goal is to be a pillar of support for the Australian music scene, ensuring that BVH remains a place where creativity thrives and where artists – and music lovers – can feel at home.”
Aboud described the BVH collaboration with Young Henrys as a “no-brainer”, with Young Henrys having a strong background in the live music scene, he said that the brewery aligned well with BVH’s community values.
“BVH has always championed the independent music scene, and partnering with an independent brewery that shares our passion for creativity and community was a no-brainer,” he said.
“Both of us believe in the power of live music to unite people, especially in a time where the live music scene has faced so many challenges. Together, we saw an opportunity to create something meaningful that celebrates and uplifts independent artists while enriching the cultural fabric of our corner of the city.”
Aboud said the event offers patrons the opportunity to discover new talent, while also providing artists with a platform to gain an audience as they navigate the music industry.
“For emerging artists, these events provide a crucial stepping stone. It’s not always easy for new talent to find their footing in the industry or figure out how to secure their first gig,” he said.
“Our goal is to be that starting point: a space where artists can connect with venues and audiences in a supportive environment. For patrons, it’s an opportunity to rediscover the joy of live music after the disruption caused by Covid. It’s about rebuilding a culture of discovery, connection, and support for the incredible talent in our local community.”
Newtown Sound kicks off this Friday with performances from The Duke of Randwick, BECHILL, and HALPERT, and then Kryver’s, Lex Lennon and SunStalkersss will take part on 7 February.
The event will then see, Bad Witch, Alex Fears and Good Hounds perform on 14 February, with Superblock, Rattlegun, and Anton Johansen on 21 February.
Tickets are on sale now, priced at $10 with specials on Young Henrys beers and food available at BVH’s Sunset Diner. Details on the line-up and program are available through the Newtown Sound website.
