Sunshine Coast beer lovers have cast their votes in Eumundi Brewery’s ‘Brewed By EU’ competition, and the winning beer is… the Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager! Passionate home brewer Josh Batten of Peregian Springs came up with the winning beer idea, beating over 300 entries from across the Sunshine Coast. The competition challenged people to develop the story and flavor combinations for a beer inspired by Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast.  The Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager will now be a limited release Eumundi brew – to be sold at select pubs and bottle shops across the Sunshine Coast.

As the competition winner, Josh was presented with a cheque for $5000 along with a carton of Eumundi beer each month for 12 months to share with friends. In naming his beer the Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager, Josh said he wanted to acknowledge the bird as a spectacle with its color and proud stature – just like this beer!

The beer’s unique ingredients are peat-smoked malt and cold brew coffee and Josh was inspired by the bushfires of 2019, and the rural fire brigade who put their lives on the line to protect our community. The crisp, clean body and a hint of smokiness remind us of the formidable beauty of our landscape. Impressed with Josh’s acknowledgment of the firies, Eumundi Brewery also announced a $5000 donation to the Eumundi Rural Fire Service from The Eumundi Brewery Community Fund.

The can design for the winning beer was illustrated by artist Sam McKenzie, born and bred in Eumundi. The runner-up was a beer called Sunshine Trinity Sour – combining flavours of pineapple, ginger, and macadamia, and was entered by Deb Munro of Sippy Downs. Her inspiration came from iconic Sunshine Coast landmarks The Big Pineapple and The Ginger Factory.
