We are now a nation of drinkers who like to keep our creature comforts close by. According to new research a huge 74 per cent of Australians now drink at home. It is a significant change from previous generations where 70 per cent of drinking took place in the pub.
This can be related to numerous factors including the availability of take-home alcohol as well as the trend for ‘wining and dining’ at home with a few friends.
Potentially also to blame is the harder economic times the country has been facing. During times of recession it is common for ‘luxuries’ such as expensive nights out to be the first to get cut back. And seemingly this latest research goes hand in hand with the ongoing fall in the rates of beer consumption being tracked worldwide.
