After an intense judging season, in which all the entries in the Australasian Whisky Awards were gulped down, Overeem, proprietor of Old Hobart Distillery and Chief Distiller of Overeem Single Malt, was declared the winner.
“We are proud of what our whisky has achieved since its launch in December 2011,” says Overeem. “Our dream has always been to share our whisky with the world. We now have that opportunity and take great pleasure in standing beside so many other world class whiskies.”
Overeem Single Malt is produced by the Old Hobart Distillery – a relatively new kid on the block, having only opened in 2005.It is a family-owned, with operations headed up by Overeem himself. His interest in whisky distilling stems from his first experience of distilling at a relative’s house in Norway. “Many people had micro-distilleries in their cellars and I really admired them, so I started experimenting when I got home” says Overeem.
Following years of research and experimentation – and a trip to Scotland, the spiritual home of all whiskies – the Old Hobart Distillery secured its licence and began producing their award-winning tipples. Today, Overeem is still fully involved in all aspects of the business including weekly distilling, bottling, hosting tastings and attending trade events.
