Reminiscent of the old Hand Pump Nights with brewer extraordinaire Matt Donelan, local die hard beer lovers will be thrilled to know that the Nag’s Head has been working hard to bring the Hand Pump Night back to life, with a plan to offer a variety of unique and varied beers to its Nag’s Head family over the next few months.
The brewers from Malt Shovel will be providing a special keg of James Squire’s India Pale Ale. The Malt shovel team will be using a traditional hand pump after tapping the keg and will be giving a short talk on what’s involved in brewing an India Pale Ale.
Back in the day India Pale Ales were brewed with higher alcohol and extra hops to survive long sea journey from London to colonial India. James Squire had his own method of surviving his arduous voyage to Australia on the First Fleet. He smuggled himself onto the “Women’s Ship” and by all reports the rest of his journey was quite nice! James Squire’s India Pale Ale has been described as “Full of character, this beer stands its ground with robust malty flavours and earthy floral aromas from dry hopping with English Fuggles. Rich and golden in colour, it boasts a feisty bitterness with a lingering crisp finish.
So get along to The Nag’s Head Hotel on the 7th December and immerse yourself in some true Australian history. The Nag’s is also offering the first 25 RSVPs a free middy of India Pale Ale, so you’ll need to get in quickly!
