Melbourne brewery Bad Shepherd are recalling their Peanut Butter & Jam Barrel Aged Porter in cans due to potential for alcohol to exceed marked alcohol content and the possibility of a rupture due to secondary fermentation. The immediate recall covers Batch 421 of Peanut Butter & Jam Barrel Aged Porter 355ml cans with a best before date of 23/07/2022 printed on the base of the can.
In a statement Bad Shepherd said cans stored in ambient temperatures may be experiencing secondary fermentation, leading to possible bulging and/or eventual rupture of the can. They said continued fermentation may also lead to a slight increase in the ABV, above the stated 7% ABV.
“Cans which have been stored chilled, should not be affected by this issue, however in the interest of ensuring our customer’s safety and in keeping with our company values of care and excellence, we have notified FSANZ and have actioned an immediate recall on all cans,” the statement read.
“Consequently, consumers should not attempt to consume this product due to the risk of the can rupturing. We do not believe that product that has already been consumed poses a health risk to consumers. Consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”
The beer has been available for sale at the brewery, their online shop and through independent retailers in Victoria, NSW, ACT and Western Australia. Bad Shepherd said they have contacted all relevant state and federal health authorities and have initiated a product recall plan.
“The secondary fermentation issue is specific to this product and no other Bad Shepherd beers are affected by this recall.”
Consumers in possession of unopened product are advised to contact their place of purchase for reimbursement (with proof of purchase) and then immediately and safely dispose of the cans.
Bad Shepherd advised: “Any can that shows any sign of bloating or bulging should be treated with care. If a four-pack carrier is still on the cans or they are in a cardboard carton, do not remove them. Wrap all cans carefully in a bag, then place in an outside bin. Cans that have been stored at ambient temperature are more susceptible to rupturing than cans stored cold.
“We sincerely apologise that our 2021 Peanut Butter & Jam Porter release has not met our standards for quality and safety. We are taking immediate action to manage this issue with safety foremost in mind and are reviewing our processes for producing beers of this nature to ensure they meet the high quality standards we strive for and consumers expect.”
